1. Trough: An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure.
2. Ridge: An elongated area of relatively high atmospheric pressure.
3. Tropical disturbance: A tropical weather system with organized convection (generally 100-300 miles in diameter) originating in the tropics or subtropics, having a non-frontal migratory character and maintaining its identity for 24 hours or longer. It may or may not be associated with a detectable perturbation of the wind field.
4. Tropical Wave: An inverted trough (an elongated area of relatively low pressure) or cyclonic curvature maximum moving east to west across the tropics. These can lead to the formation of a tropical cyclone. Also known as an easterly wave.
5. Tropical cyclone: A rapidly rotating storm that begins over tropical oceans, and they can vary in speed, size, and intensity
6. Tropical Depression: A tropical cyclone with a closed wind circulation and maximum sustained winds of 38mph.
7. Tropical Storm: A tropical cyclone with a closed wind circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39mph – 73mph.
8. Hurricane: A tropical cyclone with a closed wind circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74mph and higher.
9. Hurricane warning: Hurricane force wind conditions expected in the area within the next 36 hours.
10. Tropical cyclone watch: Hurricane force wind conditions possible in the area within the next 48 hours.
11. Tropical cyclone Alert statement: A statement to inform the public that a cyclone has entered the watch area
12. Flash flood warning: Flash flooding is imminent or happening in the area
13. Flash flood watch: Flash flooding is expected in the area within the next 6 hours.
14. Flash flood advisory: A flood advisory means that streams, creeks and drains may be elevated or even overflowing into streets, low lying and flood prone areas; however,property damage will be minimal.
15. Tsunami: Waves generated by seismic activity.
